AGO Summons Head Of Olympic Committee Over Misuse Of Authority

AGO OLYJun 18, 2019: Hafiz Wali Rahimi, head of the Physical Education and Sports Directorate and head of the National Olympic Committee, has been summoned by the Attorney General's Office (AGO) over charges of misuse of his authority.

“Despite that the Independent Administrative Reform and Civil Service Commission and the courts of the country had their legal decision in this regard, but the individual [Eltaf Yusufi] was not introduced to the post, therefore, the Attorney General’s Office is assessing the case for charges on misuse of authority,” the AGO spokesman Jamshid Rasuli said.

The main accusation against Rahimi is “Illegal” removal of Eltaf Yusufi from his post as head of the financial and administrative office of the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports.

Yusufi said that he was appointed to the post through a free competition at the Independent Administrative Reform and Civil Service Commission, but he was removed after a short time.

“The Directorate of Physical Education and Sports ignored the order on my appointment,” Yusufi said.

Members of monitoring organizations said the Afghan government has failed to assess big corruption cases.

“The offices which are responsible for sports management and improvement are marred by politics and widespread corruption,” said Ikram Afzali, head of the Integrity Watch Afghanistan.

“Misuse of authority either in sports and other departments affects the activities in this sector,” said Roman Abbasi, former member of the National Taekwondo Team.

The officials of the Physical Education and Sports Directorate did not comment on the report despite repeated attempts.

This comes days after the Attorney General's Office issued an arrest warrant for the former head of Afghanistan Football Federation Keramuddim Karim over sexual abuse of female players.
