Nangarhar officials unwilling to register assets

26decemberDecember 26, 2017:JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Government officials are reluctant to register their assets in eastern Nangarhar province where around 90 complains have been registered about administrative corruption, anti-corruption officials said on Tuesday.

Ahmad Shah Nabi Momand, head of the Anti-Corruption Department, said of the registered complaints, 50 had been resolved and the remaining 40 referred to the Attorney General Office.

Nabi told reporters here that his department’s work had been slow due to the lack of personnel.

He said they were investigating some 283 contracts of different departments of the Interior Ministry in line with presidential orders.

Due to the lack of staff, Nabi said, they were unable to transfer corruption related files to the authorities concerned in time.

Regarding alleged corruption in Nangarhar customs office, he said graft in the office was being exposed by the National Directorate of Security (NDS) and its investigation was also NDS responsibility.

He claimed some government officials despite receiving the required forms were unwilling to register their assets.

Provincial Council members claimed corruption was commonly practiced as a culture in Nangarhar and anti-corruption authorities were doing nothing in this regard.

Dr. Nasir Kamal, a local representative, told Pajhwok Afghan News that lawlessness and growing insecurity were main factors of corruption in society.

Rahmatullah Zyarmal, writer and activist, accused anti-corruption department and local official of not acting against corruption.

He said officials were involved in most of corruption cases and there was no one to stop them.
